Pool Tron Pool/Spa Operation Manual

Step 1:  Take your test kit. 

 

Step 2:  Remove the test vial.

 

Step 3: Fill the left vial to the fill line with pool water

 

Test the Chlorine Level in Your Pool

Step 4:  Add 5 drops of solution 1 to the vial you just filled with pool water.

 

Step 5: Place the cap on the test vial and shake several times.

 

Step 6: Compare the color of the water to the scale on the left of the test vial within 2-3 seconds to determine free chlorine level. Once you have the free chlorine level, wait 1-2 minutes to determine the total chlorine level.

 

How to Test the pH Level in your Pool

Step 6: Compare the color of the test water to the scale on the right of the test vial. (Greater than 7.8) proceed to Step 7. If the pH is higher than 7.8, the water is too basic and pH down will need to be added.

 

If the pH is lower than 7.4, the water is too acidic and pH up will need to be added.

 

If your pool water’s pH is to low, follow the directions provided on the side of your pH up product to raise the pH.

 

Step 7: To determine how much pH down is necessary to return your pool to a neutral pH level, you must first know how many gallons of water your pool holds.

 

If you do not know how many gallons of water your pool holds, please contact Pool Tron for assistance.

 

Step 8: Once you know how many gallons of water your pool holds, you can calculate how much pH down Will be necessary to return your pool to a neutral pH.

 

Remove the blue cap on top of the rightmost vial. Slowly add one drop of solution #3 to the test water. Replace blue cap back on top of the right most vial and shake 1-2 times. Repeat this process until the water has changed to an acceptable color (7.4 or 7.6.) Be sure to remember how many drops of solution #3 were added to the test water. This information is necessary to calculate Acid Demand.

 

How to Test the pH Level in your Pool

Step 9: Find the white Acid Demand card inside your test kit. 

 

Step 10: On the left side of the card, find the number that best represents the number of gallons in your pool.

 

Step 11: At the top of the chart, find the number that corresponds with how many drops of solution #3 you added to the test water to achieve an acceptable color (7.4 or 7.6.)

 

Step 12: Find the number in the chart that corresponds with the number of gallons in your pool and the number of drops of solution #3 you added to the test water.

 

The blue number represents how much liquid pH down is necessary to return the pool to neutral pH.

 

The red number represents how much dry pH down is necessary to return the pool to neutral pH

 

How to Test the Level of Total Alkalinity

Step 1: Fill the rightmost vial to the bottom fill line.

 

Step 2: Add 1 drop of solution #4 to the rightmost vial. Place blue cap on top of vial and shake 1-2 times to mix.

 

Step 3: Add 1 drop of solution #5 to the rightmost vial. Place blue cap on top of vial and shake 1-2 times to mix.

 

How to Test the Level of Total Alkalinity

Step 4: One drop at a time, add solution number 3 to the Rightmost vial and swirl the test water.

 

Continue adding solution #3 until the water turns clear. Be sure to remember how many drops of solution #3 you add to the test water.

 

Acceptable total alkalinity is anything above 120ppm. To calculate your total alkalinity, simply multiply the number of drops of solution #3 you added to your test water by 10.

 

Example: (14 drops of solution #3) x 10 = 140 ppm.

 

Step 5: If you need to raise the total alkalinity in your pool follow the instructions on the side of your “Alkalinity Up” product.

 

Congratulations! You have successfully tested the chemicals in your pool.

 

Daily Maintenance

  • Check and clean all skimmer baskets
  • Check and clean the Polaris debris bag and finger screen(if equipped)
  • Check and clean the strainer basket in filter and auxiliary pumsps (if needed)
  • Check and adjust the pool water level. Proper level is ½ to 2/3 skimmer opening.
  • Check the filter tank pressure gauge (10-20 p.s.i.)
  • Test and adjust the pool water chemistry.
  • Brush and\or vacuum the pool walls and floor.
  • Refill the automatic chlorinator / check salt system display.
  • Bleed off any accumulated air in the filter tank.
  • All daily checks from above.

 

Weekly Maintenance

 

NOTE:  If your pool is equipped with an EZ Clor chlorinator, fully punch the Clor Pac holes to their maximum diameter.  Punch all eight holes in the pac bottom and two holes on each side.

 

Pool Cleaning

Vacuum set-up:

  • Assemble the vac head to the telescopic pole.  Extend the pool to its full length and tighten the locking collar.
  • Press the swivel end of the vacuum hose firmly on to the vac head.  Uncoil the hose into the pool.
  • Place the vac head on the deep end of the pool floor.  Submerge the rest of the hose until you reach the free end (water should rise in the hose).
  • Plug the vac hose free end into the deep end skimmer.
  • Close the shallow end skimmer valve at the filter system (you may want to partially close the main drain valve for added suction).
  • Slowly pass the vac head over the pool floor, steps, and benches (moving too quickly may stir up debris).
  • Remove the hose.  Fully open all the valves.  Drain and recoil the hose.
  • Empty Strainer basket at filter pump. (See priming and starting)

 

Priming & Starting the Filter System

Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the pump switch, close all valves.
  2. Open the pump lid, clean and replace the basket.
  3. Fill the pump with water and reinstall the lid.
  4. Open the return line valve or valves.
  5. Open the main drain valve 1/8th turn and start the pump
  6. Open the filter tank air relief valve.
  7. When water flow is visible in the pump housing slowly open all suction valves one at a time.
  8. Close the air relief valve once a steady stream of water is flowing. Pump lid should be clear with no air bubbles
  9. Read the filter tank pressure gauge (10-20 p.s.i. is normal).

 

Preventative Maintenance

  1. Annually inspect the diving board and\or waterslide for any cracks or damage.  Retighten all bolts.
  2. Keep all leaves and debris away from the pool filtration system, especially the motors.
  3. Always turn he pool heater off 10-20 minutes before shutting down the pool filter pump.
  4. Keep both sides of the chlorinator covered (EZ Clor models only)
  5. Lubricate the pump lid o-ring with petroleum jelly once or twice a year. This will aide in removal.
  6. Have any damaged caulking joints in the deck repaired.
  7. Reseal concrete decks every 3 to 5 years.
  8. Always have your pool professionally winterized.
  9. Repair or replace damaged water tubes for the winter cover.
  10. Properly clean, patch and store the winter cover.
    1. Keep water pumped off the winter cover (if the cover has excessive  amounts of water on top, it may have a hole or holes in it.  Stop pumping until it is repaired).
  11. Safety covers with plastic underliners should be periodically checked to make sure the plastic is secured and all in place.
  12. Never lower the pool water level more than eighteen (18”) inches from the top, unless repairs are being made.  Refill as soon as possible.

 

Troubleshooting

Pool Heaters

Pool not heating

  • Make sure the pump is circulating normally and the filter tank pressure is 10-20 p.s.i.
  • Is the thermostat calling for heat?
  • Controller enabled to heat?
  • Is the on\off switch in the “on” position?
  • Is the gas control valve in the “on” position?
  • Be sure that the pilot is lit (follow manufacturer’s instructions for pilot lighting)
  • Electronic ignition heaters – be sure the power is turned on.
  • Call Pool Tron for service

 

Underwater Light

Light does not come on

  • Turn the switch to the “on” position
  • Reset the ground fault interrupters
  • Reset the circuit breakers

 

Light comes on, then trips the G.F.C.I.(call for service)

  • Moisture in the fixture
  • Faulty equipment plugged into an outlet on pool light circuit
  • The light fixture is defective

 

NOTE:  Electrical storms may cause the G.F.I. circuit to trip.  Moisture in any open outlet may cause the G.F.I. circuit to trip.

 

Allow several days for wet outlets to dry, then reset the G.F.I. If tripping continues, call for service.

 

Filtration\Circulation

Poor or weak circulation

  • Read the filter tank pressure gauge

 

Low pressure

  • Check all valve – Are they open?
  • Clean the pump and skimmer baskets and restart
  • Check the chlorinator for debris, it may allow air into the pump
  • Pool water level may be too low. Check weir operation.
  • Pump impellor may be clogged (this will require service)

 

High pressure

  • Check to see if the return line valve is open (it should be fully open)
  • Set the ozonator bypass adjustment (if equipped)
  • Clean the filter element (System 3)
  • Backwash the filter (sand filter)
  • Does the pressure gauge return to zero when off? (if not replace the gauge)

 

Water Chemistry

Cloudy water

  • Check for poor circulation
  • Test for free chlorine and adjust
  • Test and adjust the pH 7.4 – 7.6
  • Shock treat the water with super-chlorination or non-chlorine oxidizer

 

Green water

  • Check for poor circulation
  • Test for free chlorine and adjust
  • Test and adjust the pH 7-4 – 7.6Shock treat the water with super-chlorination or non-chlorine oxidizer
  • Add an algaecide treatment

 

Water irritates eyes

  • Test and adjust the pH 7.4 – 7.6
  • Test free chlorine and adjust 1.0-1.5ppm
  • Test for combined chlorine, if 2.0 ppm higher than free chlorine, shock treat the water with super chlorination or non-chlorine oxidizer

 

Low chlorine levels

  • Refill the chlorinator
  • Enlarge the holes in the Clor Pak, punch all holes in the bottom and two holes on each side

 

Water Chemistry

Proper chemical balance is essential for clean, clear, and safe pool water.  The following guidelines have proven to provide the best quality water for your swimming pool

 

Free Chlorine  1.0 ppm – 1.5 ppm
PH 7.4 – 7.6
Total Alkalinity 80 ppm – 100 ppm
Stabilizer 50 ppm – 80 ppm (outdoor only)

 

  • Daily testing is recommended if possible.
  • Minimum testing of 2 to 3 times a week.
  • Winter testing is recommended once a month.
  • Check stabilizer and salt content at least once a month. Add as needed

 

Winter Information

  • Always have your pool professionally winterized.
  • Repair or replace damaged water tubes for the winter cover.
  • Keep water pumped off the winter cover (if the cover has excessive amounts of water on top, it may have a hole or holes in it. Stop pumping until it is repaired).
  • Safety covers with plastic underliners should be periodically checked to make sure the plastic is secured and all in place.
  • Never lower the pool water level more than eighteen (18”) inches from the top, unless repairs are being made.  Refill as soon as possible.
  • Properly clean, patch, and store the winter cover.
  • Check and balance the pool water chemistry once a month.  Remember the pool volume is reduced by 1/3 because the water is lowered.  This is important when adjusting pH and total alkalinity (pH 7.4- 7.6 – total alkalinity 80 ppm – 100 ppm)
